Non-persistent sources can be generated programmatically (Java stream, DOM, Mapped Java-Object for instance) and persistent sources can be retrieved/stored in/from some XML-enabled "Resource" (XML enabled DB for instance or XML file) with or without validation rules, remotely or locally.

Manipulation means selection/modification on an XML tree part.
